Why Most People Fail To Lose Weight

by Jennifer Walletson

You may wonder why most people fail so often when it comes to losing weight. Is it because people are lazy or unwilling to give up their favorite foods or refuse to exercise? The key to losing weight is understanding why most people are unsuccessful at it and learning from those mistakes.

Probably one of the most serious factors is that most people do not fully understand what the serious risks are to being overweight. Most people want to lose weight to look better, with improving their health being a lesser concern. However, if you really delve into the statistics and medical studies you will see that obesity causes severe health problems and can even lead to premature death.

So if improving your appearance doesn’t motivate you enough to lose weight, maybe knowing how dangerous being overweight can be to your health will. Looking good in your bikini for the summer might motivate you short term, but it usually isn’t going to be enough to get you to make lifelong changes to your eating and exercise habits. When you begin to focus on the health risks of being overweight, you will realize that you will need to make some major changes and bring a serious commitment to your goal of losing weight.

This leads right into the next major reason why many people fail which is that so many jump on a quick fix diet instead of focusing on the long term and making the necessary changes they need to make to their lifestyle and habits. When the focus is short term and quick fixes, any weight loss that is achieved usually doesn’t last for long, and many times all of the weight loss is gained right back. Short term diets are also usually fairly rigid and not very realistic, so people end up dropping out and never lose any weight.

People have a tendency to get misled by all of the misinformation and hype that goes along with the marketing of many of the fad diets and some of the popular media coverage concerning weight loss. When looking at quick fix and short term solutions, people never really get educated on what is really effective when it comes to losing weight. For lasting change, regular exercise and a healthy diet is what is necessary.

An important thing for people to understand is that body weight can fluctuate up and down. So if this is not kept in mind and people are expecting to be constantly losing weight, they get discouraged when at some point this doesn’t happen. They end up feeling very discouraged and many times even quit trying. Many people seem to think about weight loss in all or nothing terms.

One other factor that seems to prevent people from achieving their weight loss goals is not truly understanding what or how much they eat on a daily basis. They don’t understand in terms of the nutritional value or caloric intake of the food they eat every day. It is very difficult to make any progress with weight loss when you don’t understand how your eating habits affect your weight loss plan.

These are several of the important factors that provide an explanation as to why so many people fail when it comes to meeting their weight loss goals. They tend to focus too much on temporary and quick fixes and don’t often get the necessary information that is needed to make permanent changes. Once you gain a good understanding of what are the contributing factors to holding people back, you can begin your own weight loss program with a different frame of reference that focuses on the long term and become properly educated on exercise and diet.
