Fortune cookies are small, crisp snacks which are extremely popular in Chinese restaurants. They can be found in Chinese another Asian restaurants all over the world although their particularly popular in the United States where they originated from. Contrary to popular belief, they do not actually come from Asia itself and were popularized in the early twentieth century by the Asian community living in the United States at the time.
These papers can contain a number of things, most commonly some kind of fortune telling or prophecy. Sometimes the message on the paper can include some lucky numbers such as a lottery or raffle number.
Fortune cookies are commonly found in Chinese restaurants although they are not just limited to United States these days. They may be found in various parts of the world although they are actually uncommon in China itself and various other countries in Asia. They are typically served after a meal restaurant and are often supplied when the bill is paid.
Fortune cookies were popularized by immigrant groups in California beginning in the twentieth century. As far as recipe was concerned, they were originally similar to the Japanese cracker which was traditionally used back in Japan. They are generally considered to be a modern invention; fortune cookies have the history steeped in Chinese legend although lot of this remains uncertain and controversial.
Fortune cookies are typically a type of desert and they are always served cold, crisp snacks. The papers are inserted into the folded cookie when it is still hot. These small strips of paper contain a message and somebody who is not familiar with fortune cookies may unwittingly bite into it and spoil the message. Fortune cookies are often served with the bill where as in normal restaurants you would probably get sweets.
