Is It A Good Idea To Eat Foods Containing Omega 3 Fatty Acids?

Science is now firmly convinced of the health benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids, but should you be eating the new foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids that you are now seeing on the shelves of your supermarket?

There’s basically 2 forms of Omega 3 fats, plant based and marine based. It’s generally considered that the marine based Omega 3 fats DHA and EPA are better for you.

So food manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon and making foods high in Omega 3. And these are now available for you to buy. So should you eat Omega 3 rich foods or is it just marketing?

Firstly lets say that there’s nothing wrong with eating foods containing Omega fats. The manufacturers generally use fish oil for the fortification process and fish oil is good for getting those healthy polyunsaturated fats DHA and EPA.

So no, there’s no reason why you should avoid foods containing Omega 3. But that isn’t the end of the answer.

Demand for these foods has increased so food companies see an opportunity, and are charging a lot more for foods high in Omega 3.

So you have to consider how much Omega 3s you are getting and at what price to answer the question. And generally speaking you don’t get a lot of good fats in most of the fortified foods, and you pay for the privilege.

To give you an example a serving of Omega 3 enriched bread will give you somewhere around 120mg of Omega 3 fats. Nice but not a lot compared to the 3000 mg you get from eating a serving of fish. And that bread will probably cost a lot more than regular bread.

Eating fish isn’t cheap and you run the risk of getting a little dose of PCBs and mercury too.

The simplest and most cost effective way to increase the amount of Omega 3 polyunsaturated fats in your diet is to take fish oil supplements. They are clean and you can take them easily each day.

So whilst there’s no problem eating foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids, it’s expensive. Use your money on good supplements and buy the non fortified foods and you’re in front on how much good fats you’re getting for the money.

Choosing the Right Knife Set for Your Needs

In any good knife set, there are all sorts of various makes of knives that will make up the set. These can be common knives, ones that work for specialized tasks, or even more professional kitchen duties. These are all great knives to look out for, such as Wusthof Knife Sets.

A utility knife can found in knife sets. This is a style of knife that may be employed for general purposes. This knife is engineered for quite a few different tasks, including chopping ingredients. A bread knife is often found in a set, also. This is a knife that is nearly always smaller and not as sharp in intensity as other knives. This style of knife is intended only for cutting bread. This can be about eight inches long.

Many knife sets will even have table knives in them. These knives will work like standard knives that may be used at the eating table, but these will have a style that will look like other kinds of knives that are included in the set that they were first included in. A good set will include four to six of these knives, such as in the Wusthof Knife Set.

These kinds of knives are all good knives to choose when looking for a knife set. These knives range from tougher ones created to help with cutting tougher foods to ones that are intended for softer foods. Many sets will also offer some table knives, too. According to the company’s website, these pots, pans, and accessories are manufactured to perform effectively for a lifetime and be attractive as well, two characteristics that we might presume apply to any set, such as the Anolon Advanced 15 Piece Knife Block Set.

Product Range

Anolon offers three categories for knives - Advanced Cutlery, Advanced Bronze Cutlery and Advanced Stainless Steel Cutlery. It appears as if Anolon hopes that the term, “advanced” will help the knives to sound better than the knives made by different manufacturers before anyone has getting their hands on the knives. Regardless of the reason for the name, there are 19 knife sets available, varying from the 15-piece sets to the individual knives, and they come with a universal sharpener thrown in for good measure.

Since a knife is only as tough as its blade, Anolon knives are made from high-quality German steel. The Advanced Collection uses carbon steel, the Bronze Collection uses high-carbon stainless steel and the Stainless Steel Collection uses stainless steel, all of which can be too complicated to a person who simply wishes to purchase knives without worrying about metallurgy. Having said that, you are able to tell the difference between these collections by the knife handles - black for Advanced, brown for Bronze and silver for Stainless Steel.

Advantages

The Anolon knives are forged, not cold rolled, and that form of production enhances the density, flexibility and hardness of the metal. Obviously, a denser and more flexible cutting blade will be easier and safer to chop with, and the metal will also sustain its sharpness longer.

It needs to be said, Anolon knives are manufactured in China. But their workmanship looks as though it is excellent, in particular relating to the condition of the blades when pulled from the package. The price of Anolon knives cannot be beat either, seeing as you recieve high-quality knives that don’t have high prices.

Other likable advantages of owning the 15-piece sets are; the durable bamboo knife block with its slot labels and a spare slot for your other good knife in addition to a knife sharpener. For specialized knives, you will be able to make use of the protective sheath which is included with every purchase.

On balance, an Anolon knife set is a good value for your money, seeing as not a lot of it will be required.

Disadvantages

There are very few things to be annoyed with with regard to Anolon knives. Yet, they are worth bringing up seeing as you want to be aware of all the issues before using your family’s money on any cutlery.

To start with, the bamboo blocks can arrive in not-quite-sterling form. There are complaints of the metal labels being corroded and the wood itself being black rather than the beautiful brown you’ll see on the website. On top of that, the rubber handles seem to flake off in places, mainly when you wipe them. It might be due to daily wear and tear, but it is usually a reason for annoyance when it happens.

Plus, you ought to sharpen these knives after every job to preserve them in top shape, and Anolon knives are less than dishwasher compatible. Proper Utensil Usage

Eating manner is not much controlled when you are at home, office, or any other place where formality is not required. But there is big difference when you eat in a formal dinner where table manner is an important thing to do. There are some basic rules in using fork and knives.

In regards to table manner, fork should be held with your tip of index and third finger, with part of other being held by your thumb. The position supports for stability which is necessary to eat in quietness.

The knife is held between your thumb and third finger with the index finger resting on the top of the blade. If this seems awfully basic, look around. You’ll find people gripping the knife like a dagger and holding the fork like a miniature cello.

There are two differing styles of eating: American and Continental. The difference between the two is primarily how you hold the knife and fork while taking food to your mouth and what you do with them while resting between bites.

The American Style is the one most commonly used in this country and is often referred to as the zigzag method. When you are cutting your food, the fork is in the left hand with tines down and the handle between your thumb and third finger.

When you finish cutting the food and you are ready to take it into your mouth, put the knife on the plate with blade facing inside. Do not forget to switch the fork to your right hand before you put the food into your mouth. Fork should also be kept pointed up while you eat. The rules are generally more formal than those of the other popular style.

The Continental style is not much different from the American style. Most people are used to this style and thus it is easier to do. The basic rules are generally same. But you do not have to move the fork to your right hand to put the food into your mouth and you do not have to point it up while eating.

The knife then becomes more versatile. You can use it to move food onto the back of your fork. However, it is still not permissible to wave it around or use it to punctuate your conversation.

One more point to keep in mind when cutting your food; cut only one bite at a time. Your mother cut up all your food at one time because she wanted to be able to eat her dinner uninterrupted.

Making Kitchen Life Easier with Cookware

The term ‘cookware’ can mean any sort of vessel used in the preparation of food in the kitchen. The shape of the vessel will largely depend on its intended food in an effort to maximize cooking options. This can come in the shape of saucepans, skillets, frying pans, soup kettles, or saucepots, amongst others.

There’s a long history of cookware. People have been preparing food ever since fire was discovered and quickly came up with clay pots which were used to heat and cook their food. Some consider this to be the first type of baking ware. With the discovery of bronze and iron being used as a building material, the containers increased in their level of refinement. The arsenal of skillets, frying pans, and sauce pans that we use today pay homage to the 17th century, and only keep getting better and better.

Cookware comes in a variety of materials. Metal is prevalent, with pots and pans commonly constructed out of such metals as aluminium, copper, cast iron, and stainless steel. Many times the pans are coated with a material so that food doesn’t stick to them in the cooking process, known as non-stick pans. Other common materials used are glass, silicone, or ceramic. Each type helps the food cook differently, though this is left up to the personal preference of the chef.

There are a few specialty pieces of cookware that should be mentioned, such as Dutch ovens and casserole pans. These are used for stews, casseroles, braised meats, or anything else that should be cooked slowly, over a period of many hours. For quick cooking, a skillet is always a good bet, as you can quickly cook basic ingredients in a short amount of time. Griddles can be used not only for pancakes, but for any sort of grilled item that needs to be dropped onto a hot surface and needs to spread out, including omelettes or other food items that begin as a liquid and end as a solid.

There is also a whole different set of cookware that is designed only for baking, including springform cake pans, angel food cake pans, and pie pans. Flat sheets are used for cookies or other shortbreads, and loaf pans are used for bread. Basically, for any sort of baked good that you can think of, there is a piece of equipment specifically designed for it.

Kitchenware - How to Stock a Kitchen

Owning a well-stocked kitchen is worth taking the time and effort to complete, not only in terms of pantry requirements, but also in terms of the kitchenware that makes it possible to prepare food as well. This can refer to a group of items, including cookware, utensils, baking dishes and kitchen appliances. Before stocking your kitchen, it’s a good idea to think about what type of cooking that you do the most. If someone is a big baker, for example, it makes sense to purchase a great set of baking dishes for all the various types of cakes and bread that you may make.

Kitchenware goes a long way back; in the ancient pre-kitchen era, people used clay or stone bowls in order to heat up food over a fire. As mankind progressed, people learnt how to manipulate metal and the potential began to grow. Recipes grew more complex as well. This gave birth of what we know today as modern cuisine.

For those who are interested in doing a lot of frying, the set of frying pans that is collected is important. Specific kitchenware has been created to make frying simpler; the birth of non-stick technology is extremely useful for pan-frying. This prevents food getting stuck to the bottom of the pan and getting burnt. Deep fryers are also available; they submerge food into a tub of hot oil to give it a crunchy exterior.

Utensils are a necessary component of kitchenware. In the West, this comprises the basic fork, spoon, and knife set. These can come in different materials, including the traditional silver. Stainless steel is probably one of the most popular and common types of utensil material. In Eastern cultures chopsticks are used, made out of wood or other materials.

Appliances in the kitchen range in their level of complexity, but all are designed to give the chef less hands-on work to do. Kitchenware in the appliance category can include the basic blenders, beaters, and food processors. More complicated items include microwave ovens, pasta makers, ice cream makers, and juicers. Basically, whatever possible type of food that could be prepared probably has its own appliance that makes its preparation easier and more hands-off for the cook. Standards of convenience grow every day, with new inventions making cooking easier than ever before.
