Cool Cereal Bowls

by Charlie Reese

The great thing about cereal bowls is that they can be anything and any size. I remember staying with a friend when I was younger, and watching her three big brothers in awe. They found the largest bowls they could, and filled them to the brim with cereal, and then went back for seconds. These bowls were ones most of us would mix a cake batter in, but for them, that was just a first go at breakfast. Most dont need that size, of course, but they come in almost any size for any person.

The cereal bowls I buy for my daughter are smaller, and they are made of plastic. There are many moms that like this type because not only are they not going to break when dropped – which is bound to happen – but they are not that hard to replace when they wear out. Plastic can be very durable, but if you put the wrong type of plastic cereal bowl in the microwave or dishwasher by accident, you are going to have some pretty interesting shaped bowls when they come out.

There are some plastic cereal bowls that will go into any type of appliance (other than the oven, obviously) and will last much longer. The only problem with these is that they tend to be very small. Once your child gets past a certain age, there isnt enough room in those types of cereal bowls for an average breakfast serving. They are often more durable though, and can even be put away in between children if you plan to have more.

Though many cereals are target towards children, adults love cereal just as much. My husband often has a bowl late at night. He prefers the larger cereal bowls that he can fill, and these are usually the glass ones. The best thing about glass is that they come in all sizes, colors, and sometimes, shapes. Though I am sure there is no scientific reason behind it, it seems that cereal just tastes better in glass cereal bowls. The glass also seems to keep the milk cooler for longer, and perhaps that is why it seems to taste better.

Plastic or glass, cereal bowls are often very inexpensive, and easy to replace. Most families have them, and everyone knows exactly what they are. You may put soup, salad or other foods within them from time to time, but they are always for cereal first and foremost.

Tips to Ensure a Great AND Yummy Barbecue

by Ashley T Cassell

The barbecue is a great way to enjoy a meal

A balmy sun kissed day,the lovely aroma of woodchip and charcoaltogether with a nice glass of pimms. What could be better!

There are a couple of things you need to do to make sure your barbecue is a success. Don’t have the day ruined by a mishap that could easily have been avoided.Keeping to a few simple guidelines will ensure that any excitement is of a positive kind!

Getting the barbecue lit can usually be relied upon to set the pulse running for more than one reason.

After it’s lit the next thing to remember is that it will take the barbecue a goodly amount of time to heat up. Make sure you allow for that.

Of course if you’re using a gas or electric barbecue you can probably avoid too much fuss or problem at this stage – ease of lighting is one of the main reasons people choose these types.

If you are using charcoal never be tempted to use lighter fluid to ease the lighting. It will permeate into the food and make it taste awful. Believe me I’ve done it often enough to know. The only thing I can suggest if you find your better half has already made a replica of Dantes Inferno is to let the coal burn for at least thirty minutes that way you won’t spoil the taste of the food.

There’s nothing quite like food that has been cooked or smoked over wood chips. If you’re used to barbecuing and have cooked this way often you probably already knew that.

For those that aren’t so experienced, there’s nothing beats that gorgeous flavour associated with cooking over wood chips.

Adding BBQ wood chips will promote you into the super league of barbecuers.

Whether you have an electric, gas or charcoal BBQ you can add wood chips to get an authentic barbecue flavour

The secret to using wood chips is not to let them burn too quickly and you can do this by soaking them for about 15 minutes before you use them. They should be moist but not saturated.

With masses of flavours to choose from you can pick out one that will just meet your needs. Try matching lighter wood chips with lighter food.

Try Alder Wood with seafood or pork, fruitwoods (for example cherry and apple) with poultry, pork or veal The stronger flavours of maple and hickory are best suited to Lamb and duck and possibly poultry too.

But remember it’s all about the food. Make sure you get the best you can afford for your guests. They’ll love you for it.

All that remains is for me to bask in the adulation of my satisfied friends and family. Now who’s for a Pimms?

An apple or two a day is another smart choice for your cholesterol reducing diet plan. While lowering cholesterol, they’re loaded with vitamin A, warding off cancer and those nasty colds. Replace that candy bar with an apple for a healthful snack.

When you make salads, use raw spinach instead of lettuce. Packed with antioxidants and fiber, you’ll reduce your risk of cancer while getting those cholesterol numbers down. Fresh spinach is most effective. You can add a side of lightly steamed spinach as a side dish to an entree of cold water fish, such as salmon, for a power dinner of a cholesterol reducing diet menu. Combine in a chef’s salad of spinach, garlic and mushrooms for a tasty treat and a premium cholesterol reducing diet dish. Soy is an undisputed anti-cancer agent as well.

Speaking of mushrooms, Shiitake mushrooms are a powerful addition to your cholesterol reducing diet plan. Available fresh or dried, not only do they reduce your cholesterol, but simultaneously reduce HBP and reduce your risk of cancer.

Make cold water fish a regular part of your cholesterol reducing diet. Salmon, halibut, sea bass and tuna are all high in the Omega-3 fatty acids. While improving your cholesterol readings, you’re decreasing cardiovascular risks, such as heart attacks by a whopping 50%! Explore curry recipes. Turmeric is the main ingredient, a spice which lowers cholesterol, aids digestion, reduces blood sugar levels, as well as your risk of cancer. If you suffer from arthritis, turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory.

It’s interesting to note that foods which regulate cholesterol levels are most often potent anti-cancer agents. These foods are also easily combined into tasty recipes that make it easy to create a cholesterol reducing diet plan that’s a pleasure to consume. Go for it!

The Advantages Of A Coffee Bean Grinder

by Ned Dagostino

True coffee lovers know that fresh ground coffee tastes best. And that’s why so many coffee aficionados are now using their own coffee bean grinder to get that fresh taste every day in their homes.

But freshness is only one advantage of grinding your own beans. You will also have total control over how fine you make the grind. That is of paramount importance to coffee lovers everywhere.

If you haven’t tried grinding your own beans yet, maybe you think it’s hard to do. It isn’t. Or maybe you think it’s a messy process. Again, this simply isn’t correct.

The only argument that “holds water” is that it’s just easier to open a can and start brewing. And while this is true, once you taste the difference between store bought coffee in a can and freshly ground beans, you’ll realize quickly just what you’ve been missing.

As soon as coffee beans are ground they begin to lose some of their flavor and aroma. That’s the reason grinding the beans yourself will result in a better tasting and smelling cup. You can simply grind the beans right before you brew (the process is quick) and your coffee will be as flavorful as possible.

How the grinder works depends on the type you get. There are two primary choices, the burr grinder and the blade grinder.

The biggest advantage of the blade grinder is that it costs less. It’s much like a small blender with the blades grinding up the beans. There’s no doubt that this is preferable to coffee that comes in cans, but it’s not the best way to grind beans. Here’s why. When you grind beans you want to have a large surface area. This means more of the oils and flavor can be pulled from the beans when the hot water passes over them. Blade grinders will give you an uneven grind, and your cup of coffee will not be as good as it can be.

Your local coffee house will generally be using a burr grinder simply because they give you a much better grind. The burrs are discs made of metal, and they are spaced precisely to give you a much more even grind. The result is a better cup of coffee. And burr grinders are normally adjustable so you can set them for the type of coffee you prefer. Whether you like Turkish drip coffee or automatic drip coffee, a burr grinder will give you the exact grind you want.

Not everybody likes their coffee the same way. In a lot of ways, perfect coffee is very subjective. But something every coffee lover can agree on is that freshly ground coffee just tastes better. So really, whether you get a burr or blade coffee bean grinder, you’ll always end up with a cup of coffee that is better than what you currently drink. Try it once and you may never again buy a can of coffee that is already ground.

You might even jump out of bed in the morning, realizing that a delicious and fresh cup of coffee will be in your hands in just minutes.

Make Healthy Restaurant Recipes at Home

by Chef Pablo

For some reason McDonalds is a huge motivator for eight year old little girls. I love to give my daughter a nice treat every once in a while. We’re not a family that eats out more than once a week and usually it’s something other than fast food. But, this time, my daughter wanted a Happy Meal and I was happy to take her. I’ve been doing very well with my eating lately, so I planned on making something at home.

About three months ago, I would find myself at lunch in a fast food drive through at least a couple of times a week. I would order a Big Mac or even a Double Quarter Pounder if I was exceptionally hungry. Sure, I still crave those fries when I drive by and get a good whiff, but now I can control my urges. But why can’t I have these items at home using healthy alternatives?

What if I made that exact same burger at home, but I substituted some healthy alternatives? I’ve been doing up restaurant recipes for quite some time and I always try to duplicate exactly what the restaurants make. What if I reduced the cream in Outback Steakhouse’s Walkabout Soup? What if I replaced the Italian sausage in Olive Gardens Zuppa Toscana Soup with turkey sausage? Could I make it into something healthy?

You don’t have to tell me that low fat cream cheese is a little different than the full fat version and turkey substitutes can’t possibly taste like pork or beef, but I’m always surprised at how close they can come. A few months ago I wanted food that tasted the same as the restaurant, today I want food that’s allows me to fit in the same size pants tomorrow.

I’ve put together a list of things you can do to change up your favorite restaurant recipes to help them fit into a healthier lifestyle.

The Low Fat Alternative – Replace the cheese with a low fat alternative. Even heavy cream can be replaced with evaporated skim milk. I’m sure you realize mayonnaise comes in both low fat and no fat versions and make a great substitute. You can even try some of the off the shelf egg substitutes for the real deal.

Giving Thanks For Turkey – The other day I actually bought some turkey bacon. That is a HUGE stretch for a bacon aficionado like myself. It wasn’t bad. It wasn’t real bacon but it wasn’t bad either. Try finding a turkey substitute for your favorite high fat meats.

Low Fat Oil Spray – Do some experimenting with different cooking methods. Sometimes a crispy coating can be achieved with some cooking spray and baking instead of deep frying. Stir fry doesn’t have to soak in several tablespoons or oil to take good. A few quick shots of spray and you’re good with a tenth of the fat.

Sugar Busting – Sugar is everywhere these days. But, you can fight the battle and win. When you’re favorite top secret recipe calls for sugar, measure out some Splenda instead. I’ve done this with so many recipes and the results have been fantastic.

A turkey sausage and Egg White McMuffin may not taste exactly like that high fat version you had a week ago on your way to work, but you’re waistline is worth the sacrifice. Plus, it’s not that big a sacrifice. Try it at breakfast tomorrow. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I have plenty of restaurant recipes on my website that are waiting for your modifications. Don’t be afraid to experiment a little and see what you come up with. You never know, you might end up liking the new healthy version better than the one at the restaurant.
