Who first made Chocolate Chip Cookies?

by Cherie Carb

A very popular cookie is the Chocolate Chip Cookie. A favorite treat of our family, we like it best right out of the oven.

Done in a drop style, chocolate chip cookie dough generally has brown sugar, white sugar, butter and semi-sweet chocolate chips as part of the ingredients.

Chocolate chip cookies have many variations. Some are m&m’s, oatmeal, and nuts. Some variations include white chocolate too, like white chocolate with macadamia nut for example.

Mrs. Fields make a cookie-wich that I love. It is two cookies with frosting in the middle! Talk about sugar rush and calories! Thankfully for me our Mrs. Fields stand is no longer at the local mall. :)

A lady by the name of Ruth Graves Wakefield is the one whom made this great treat. We owe her thanks. The famous name she gave them was “Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies”.

Why “Toll House”? It was because she had bought an inn with her husband, Kenneth Wakefield in Massachusetts and was the cook there.

“Toll House Inn” was an inn, restaurant and a toll stop. Being built on a toll road, folks stopped there to pay their tolls like a modern day toll both for us.

Ruth Graves Wakefield had written a cookbook in 1940′s that had her recipes in it from the years of cooking at the inn. The cookbook was called “Ruth Wakefield’s Recipes:Tried and True”. It became a best selling cookbook.

In the 1960′s the Toll House Inn was sold by the Wakefields. It went through changes and in the 1970′s was bought, restored and then it was claimed by fire in the 1980′s.

Ruth Graves Wakefield lived from 1903 to 1977. She is buried in Massachusetts.

Massachusetts has the chocolate chip cookie as it’s official cookie thanks to a proposal in 1997.

Billions of variations are made and eaten of this famous cookie all over the world. We should pay thanks to Mrs. Wakefield for the cookie we all love.

by Lois K Butler

It is a reality that some foods are better than others. Few would argue that an apple is more wholesome than a potato chip and you will be healthier if you have broccoli rather than gummy bears, but there is a group of foods that are so enhanced in food value that they have been dubbed “superfoods”. These are foods that can help us to live longer and healthier lives.

Superfoods have a extreme strength of important nutrients as well as typically being low in calories. Many of these nutrients have been confirmed to be useful in the prevention of disease, and to undo the effects of aging. Consumption of a diet that is plentiful in the fundamental nutrients that is found in these foods can help check cardiovascular disease, type II Diabetes, hypertension, certain cancers and Alzheimer’s disease

Most of these extremely nourishing foods claim a mixture of antioxidants, phytonutrients, polyphenols, omega fatty acids, and more. The greater part of them are found complete in nature with little processing. They are complex and they contain hundreds of yet to be identified compounds and nutrients.

A emergent body of study suggests that the nutrients from food work best in performance with each other. That is why it is most excellent to eat a mixture of good for your health foods rather than focus on just a few. Nutrients from a extensive array of foods function concurrently to uphold good health and to avoid the troubles of aging.

The ORAC scale or the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity measures the antioxidant capacity of a food; this is a measurement of how well the antioxidants contained within the food were able to alleviate oxygen free radicals in a test tube. The higher the ORAC number the higher the antioxidant facility of the food.

Countless foods have elevated ORAC numbers, but the tangible food that has the highest ORAC score of all is the acai berry from the rainforests of Brazil. This little berry is weighed down with antioxidants, polyphenols, essential fatty acids and even a full range of 19 amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein.

Other superfoods take in spinach and other greens, all of the berries, including blueberries and cranberries, cabbage, cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables, wild salmon, walnuts and other nuts and seeds and even dark chocolate and tea.

Including the exceptional sustenance from superfoods is an tremendous way to stay well and strong and to impede the conditions typically coupled with aging.

Cheap Organic Food – Healthy Eating For Little Outlay

by Virginia S Froyski

Difficult economic times usually mean many cuts in spending, unfortunately this probably includes eating organic food but before you give it up entirely consider the suggestions in this article to make it a much cheaper proposition.

What methods can you use to obtain organic food on a budget?

The first idea is simple, grow your own at home.

If you are already a keen gardener then I am sure you will know about growing organically already, just a few containers, some specially prepared compost and natural pest control methods are all you need to make it a success.

Keeping chemicals away from your plants is a governing principal but natural control methods can work just as well.

A nice shortcut can be found in your local garden centre, you will probably find ready to buy organic seeds and compost on their shelves.

For natural control of pests you will also find options at your garden centre for benign bugs which you can introduce into your garden to prey on the bugs that cause damage to your new plants.

Growing your organic plants in containers is a good way to separate them from the rest of your garden which you may wish to keep non organic.

In this way you can provide your plants with a mini organic environment which is easily controlled and transportable too.

In fact if you have limited space or even just a windowsill this is an ideal way to grow organic food, it is great fun and very tasty too.

Budget Shopping For Organic Food

If you live in an area close to farmland then you may be lucky enough to have an organic farm from which you can buy produce direct.

Organic farming is gaining popularity and as demand for fresh produce grows more and more farmers are opening farm shops to sell directly to the public.

Farmers get to keep more of the profit instead of lowering their prices to sell to the large supermarkets and you get fresh, quality organic produce on a regular basis and also get to support your local community.

A great thing to do in the summer months is to visit farms that let you pick your own fruit, usually you get to eat a lot whilst picking so trying out the goods in advance, organic of course!

You buy by weight and always get a good deal on price, if you go with a group of friends or family as well you can share out the produce and all profit from the day.

Of course whilst you are at the farm why not see if they also sell other organic produce like meat and dairy. Last year I bought some wonderful honey at half the price I would have paid at my local store.

You should be able to obtain organic free range eggs as well, always popular and so useful in many recipes.

I hope that you can find some ways in this article to keep it organic and not give up on your healthy lifestyle.

Cortlands – A Great Baking Apple

by Cherie Carb

I always wondered how to choose a great baking apple. I mean, what really should I look for? Well a great baking apple has two important characteristics: a tough outer skin and a mixed taste. What is a mixed taste? It is sweet and tart.

An example is the Cortland Apple. Cortland Apple is a great baking apple. It is available in the fall of the year, around September.

Cortland Apples were a cross breed apple. It came to be at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station 1898.

The name of the Cortland Apple came from the county in New York, Cortland County, which gets it’s name from Mr. Pierre Van Cortlandt.

Cortland County got its name from Mr. Pierre Van Cortland the President of the Convention who wrote the 1st Constitution for New York State. Mr. Pierre Van Cortland also served as lieutenant governor for the state as well. So the Cortland possesses a historic name in New York.

Being a juicy apple, makes Cortland apples great for anything. Being sweet and tart also does too. The flesh of this apple is white where as others tend to be yellow in nature.

Baking is not all these apples are great for. They make great additions to a fruit salad or kabobs or garnishes for other items. How about with crackers and cheese on a plate? Yum!

To pick a good apple at the stand or grocer, test your Cortlands for firmness. In the palm of your hand, your apple should feel firm and heavy.

Another tip, if the skin is wrinkling when you move your thumb over the apple, then it is not the apple you want. This apple may not have been kept cool or have been kept cool too long.

To store your Cortlands, keep them as cool as possible. Best place is in the frig. Apples will not freeze unless temps are below 28 degrees F.

And if you are worried about them browning, do not fret! Take your slices or what have you, rub a bit of lemon juice all over and they will be great for awhile.

Make sure to visit your local orchard to see what great apples they have. It is fun and a great thing to do with the kids. And it is the best way to taste a fresh apple anytime.

Why The Acai Berry Works At Weight Loss When Other Products Do not?

by Dana Hawkes

You will find a many number of testimonials on the Internet about the effectiveness of the acai berry for weight loss. You will see a lot of people commenting about how the acai berry has made them lose up to 5 pounds in a week. You will also read about people who have tried other weight loss products and failed and then changed to using an acai berry product which has shown them positive effects. At the same time, you will read about medical and health experts promoting the acai berry’s effectiveness in weight loss.

Why is the acai berry so potential in weight loss then? We have all heard over and over again about its high antioxidant content, which is clearly a point. The antioxidants in the acai berry are in completely high concentration; the highest that is found in any other natural food. These antioxidants are instrumental in removing free radicals from the body, which is one reason why the metabolic processes within the body improve and it becomes healthier overall. Digestion improves and the body no longer stores fat within it.

But the antioxidant action is not the only thing that works for weight loss. There are different other points. One of the reasons is that the acai berry helps in the removal of the LDL cholesterols in the body because of the high amount of HDL cholesterol present in it. The berry is a rich reserve of omega 6 and omega 9 fatty acids, which are unsaturated fatty acids that promote HDL cholesterol in the blood.

The other reason is the presence of a high amount of fiber in the berries. This fiber content aids in digestion by providing the right amount of roughage for the food. The roughage helps aggregate the undigested food matters and properly eliminate them from the system. Due to this, the colon is not overburdened and the digestive process improves overall.

One more reason for the effectiveness of the acai berry diet is what some label as a side effect. The acai berry can reduce the appetite. However, this is not dangerous because the berries contain all the nutrients that the body might need. This actually reduces the food intake for the person which helps in the weight loss process.
