It is likely that a lot of people get ripped off daily when buying cake decorating supplies as with a lot of other things. Basically though, there are only two options available to you, the Internet or the High Street.

Whether you buy from a High Street store or on the Internet, there will be a wide variety of prices that people will charge you, that’s life! The one advantage that the High Street has of course is that there are no shipping costs! However, please do consider how much it costs you in fuel and parking costs to get to that shop! Frequently it is even more AND you actually have to leave the house!

My personal preference will always be the Internet for whatever you are looking for, even if its just to check out what is available. If you go searching in the shops consider how long it will take to find what you want and will it be in stock when you get there? How often have you gone shopping without phoning first to check whether the item is in stock? I know Im guilty of that!!

There are other problems to consider if you go to the shops. Will it rain and you’ll get soaked? Do you have to take children with you, if so, how much extra is that going to cost you in treats and how long will your patience hold!? How long does it take to get to the stores? Fine if its just down the road but often specialist shops may not be that close.

Although most of the cake decorating supplies you are liable to buy may not be very large, if you get a lot, have you considered how you will carry them back home? Not that bad if you go by car, but public transport ” a nightmare! Get the post-man involved, much easier and it keeps someone employed!

Surf the web, find what you want, then do a price check at other online sites. It is unlikely that a particular site will be the cheapest for everything, so you will need to work that one out for yourself. When looking where you can buy cake decorating supplies, Id just go for the store that had the fastest delivery and that felt right ” not very scientific, but do trust your instinct and have fun opening your parcels when they are delivered!

Are Wheat Berries Really Berries

Wheat berry? Why does everyone keep talking about this new berry called wheat berries? The recent trends toward more healthy whole grain diets has caused the popularity of this term. However, wheat berries are nothing new.

Wheat berries have been around for thousands of years as a primary source of vitamins and minerals. Grown in different forms, wheat berries have been one of the world’s most important sources of food. Ground up to make flour, sprouted as a refreshing veggie or cooked for a soft and chewy addition to any meal, a wheat berry is enjoyed for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Oval in shape and tan in color the wheat berry is made up of three parts. On the outside is the bran. The bran contains protein, B-vitamins, minerals and insoluble fiber. Next is the germ that is like the seed or sprouting part of the grain. The wheat germ is highly concentrated with vitamins and minerals. Lastly, the endosperm is the largest part filled with starch, protein, minerals, carbohydrates and soluble fiber. The endosperm is what is separated from the other two parts to make processed white flower. True whole wheat foods will always contain all three parts and that is why they are more healthy.

There are two types of hard red wheat berries, spring and winter. Hard red spring wheat berries have high gluten content, (gluten gives dough its elasticity) and higher protein content than winter wheat. Spring wheat berries are the kernels of choice when ground for baking bread, the dough is easier to work with and creates a light, nicely textured loaf.

When ground to a flour in a mill, hard red spring wheat will keep all of its nutritional value. If you break the berry and take out the bran and germ you will get what has dominated our supermarkets and food products for too long, refined white flour. If you add a little chemical bleaching you get bleached white flour. If you throw a tiny bit of the germ or bran back in you can now call your flour “enriched”. Don’t be fooled. There is very little nutritional value in any processed flours.

Wheat berries can also be cooked whole, by boiling them in salted water for an hour (longer if you like a more tender consistency). The cooked wheat berries will have a sweet, nutty flavor and resemble barley. You can use them in casseroles, soups, salads and cereals. Wheat berries can also be pan toasted before cooking, for an added richness. To use as a topping, sprinkle crunchy textured wheat berries on yogurt and fruit.

In addition to the great taste and versatility of the wheat berry, there are of course the great health benefits. Because of the high amounts of dietary fiber, eating hard red spring wheat berries will reduce cholesterol, regulate your digestion and blood sugar levels. Recent reports indicate that this means lower risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
