Betsy Devos Supports Tough Laws for Gun Policies After the Florida Massacre

The recent school shooting in Florida that claimed more than 17 lives of young students has raised a number of concerns. The school shooting which was carried out by an expelled distressed student is one of the deadliest school shooting in America’s history. The wave of a school shooting has increased of late in the United the states. The United States Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has raised a grave concern over the issue which has become a common phenomenon in America’s schools. In fact, more than 430 people have been shot in over 230 school shootings.


Betsy DeVos has called on the congressional leaders to hold a special hearing on the wave of school shootings. Speaking on a recent radio interview with radio host Hugh Hewit, DeVos did not offer any policy prescription on the gun policy but said that the recent shooting should spur ways of dealing and tracking mental health issues.The Douglas High School shooting was masterminded by a former student alleged to be mentally distressed.


Betsy feels that the lawmakers in the Congress should be discussing such issues related to mentally incapacitated people being in possession of guns instead of waiting for the killings to happen to discuss them. Betsy blames the Congress for only waiting for the misfortunes to occur so that they can discuss it. The lawmakers should actually work on the ways of preventing the occurrence of such misfortunes in the future.


The sentiments of Betsy DeVos received a wider support from many people. Senator Patty Murray who is in the Senate health education and labor and pension committee echoed the sentiments of Education Secretay Betsy DeVos. The senator said she wholeheartedly agree with Betsy and urged the Republican Senate members to make date to discuss the hearing. The discussion should come up with an amicable solution once and for all. Senator Murray supports safety gun laws and tough policies to end the scourge of school shootings.


Other members who offered their full support to Betsy DeVos include Republican Bobby Scott who is a member of House Committee on Education and the Workforce and his colleague Suzanne Bonamici. They urged the committee’s Republican chair to schedule a hearing to discuss the matter. Democrats have also backed the idea for a special hearing.
